Reptiles are cold-blooded and they are covered in scales. Being cold-blooded means that their bodies react to the temperature of their surroundings. When they get too warm, they can go into the water or shade to cool off. When they get too cold they can hang out in the sun to warm themselves up. Some creatures that belong to the reptile group of animals are snakes, alligators, crocodiles, tortoises, lizard, etc.Scales protect their bodies. Scales can be hard or soft, large or small. These reptiles can be seen in Machia Biological Park. Gharial:: Its long, narrow jaws with over a hundred teeth are well designed to catch fish. The gharial catches the fastest of fish by slashing its jaws in water. Once caught, the fish is gulped first. Fish is the staple food of Gharial. Occasionally it also eats turtles, birds and small mammals. The peculiar snout prevents the Gharial from trying for bigger animals. If a big fish does get caught then Ghana gharial first moves to shallow waters to maintain its balance. After that, it jerks its head now and then. As a result, the fish breaks into pieces. Crocodile:: The female crocodile is an exceptionally good mother. She digs a hole to lay eggs. After that, she keeps an eye on the nest for the two months that are required for the eggs to hatch. At times she does not even eat for those two months. She waits anxiously the "umph, umph" sound of the baby crocodile from inside the egg. Upon hearing the first sound, she scrapes the earth away form the nest. The mother crocodile then carries the young to the water in her mouth. Sometimes, the father also provides the ferry services. The jaws that could break the leg of a deer can be gentle enough to crack the egg without hurting the baby. Monitor Lizard:: The Monitor Lizard hold their heads erect on their long necks, which gives them the appearance of being alert. They intimidate predators by lashing out with their tails, inflating their throats, hissing loudly, turning sideways and compressing their bodies. They do not divest themselves of their tails, like some other lizard. Once lost, the tail of a monitor does not grow back. The grip of this animal is very strong. Monitors are carnivorous and will devour anything they are capable of dismembering and gulping down. Their diet includes snails, grasshoppers, beetles, fish, squirrels etc. The incubation period is 8-10 weeks. Spiny Tailed Lizard:: This species of lizard is found in Thar desert, Kutch and surrounding arid zones in India and Pakistan. These lizard are mainly herbivorous. They play important role in the food chain of desert ecosystem as they attract raptors and predators. They are hunted by local people in belief that the fat extracted from it is an aphrodisiac.
